Zyban Information
|
Zyban Uses?
Zyban is used to stop smoking. It's the first pill designed to help you
stop smoking that doesn't contain nicotine itself. The prescription is available
from your doctor, and has helped even long term smokers finally overcome
the habit. You can use it discreetly, so no one even has to know you are
using it.
Zyban is an antidepressant and improves your mood. It has also been used
to treat depression and has been prescribed for other uses. Talk to your
doctor about your particular case.
Zyban Directions?
Zyban pills give you the emotional and mental edge you need to actually
break the smoking habit. Once you have taken Zyban for two weeks, you can
choose a day to finally quit smoking. After that, continue taking Zyban
for between seven to twelve weeks, depending on your doctor's directions.
Zyban pills are taken orally. You can swallow them with or without a meal.
Most prescriptions are for between one and three pills per day.
Read the prescription information carefully and follow the directions. Ask
for an explanation on anything that isn't clear to you. Don't stop taking
Zyban because you feel good. Your doctor will likely want to gradually reduce
your dosage and then take you off of Zyban. You will have to take Zyban
for several weeks before the full benefit is felt.
Zyban Side Effects?
Side effects from Zyban that are most common:
Drowsiness - weakness or tiredness - excitement or anxiety - dry mouth -

Some interactions between medications can be more severe than others. Tell
your doctor and/or pharmacist what medications you are currently taking,
including any over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbals.
Zyban Warnings?
There are few reported problems with Zyban. However, large doses can cause
some to have seizures. Because of this, make sure your doctor knows if you
have a history of seizures, brain injury, brain tumor, or eating disorders.
It's also important to let him or her know if you are taking any prescriptions
antidepressants, tranquilizers, or anti-psychotics.
Tell your physician if you have any history of glaucoma, overactive thyroid,
difficulty urinating, heart, kidney, or liver disease, or an enlarged prostate.
Women who are currently pregnant or who are planning to become pregnant
should talk to their doctor before using Zyban. Breastfeeding mothers should
also speak to their doctor about Zyban use.
Zyban commonly causes drowsiness. Until you know how you will react to the
medication, do not drive or operate machinery. Avoid alcohol, as it compounds
the drowsiness.
Zyban Drug Interactions?
Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Bupropion or any
other drugs.
Tell your doctor and pharmacist what other prescription and nonprescription
drugs you are taking, or have taken in the last 2 weeks, especially anticoagulants
[warfarin (Coumadin)]; antihistamines; carbamazepine (Tegretol); cimetidine
(Tagamet); levodopa (Sinemet, Larodopa); lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid); MAO
inhibitors [phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate)]; medication

(Ritalin); ritonavir (Norvir); sedatives; sleeping pills; thyroid medications;

Zyban Missed Dose?
For those who are ordered to take more than one Zyban each day, take any
missed doses as soon as you remember. However, if it's close to time for
your next dose, skip the missed dose and use your usual schedule.
For those who are ordered to take only one Zyban at bedtime, if you forget
until the next morning, don't take the missed dose. Continue with the next
regularly scheduled pill.
Zyban Storage?
Zyban, and all other medications, should stay tightly sealed in their original
container. Make sure it's out of the reach of children. A proper storage
location is at room temperature and away from heat and moisture found in
places like kitchens and bathrooms. Don't keep pills that are expired or
that you don't need. Ask your pharmacist about proper disposal techniques.
Anything Else I Should Know About Zyban?
It's a good idea to review your health insurance to see if your expenses
for smoking cessation therapy can be covered. Not all plans will cover it,
however. If your does not, it is still worth it to undergo Zyban therapy,
since the long-term gain is better. The cost of Zyban compared to a pack
a day expense of .095 per year is certainly clear.
When the brain chemicals dopamine and norepinephrine get out of balance,
depression results. Zyban works to keep these two chemicals in balance,
and can reverse the signs of depression.
