Paxil Information

Paxil Directions?
Follow the instructions carefully when using Paxil. You should drink a full glass of water with each dose. Paxil can be taken with or without food. You should not crush, chew, or break the controlled-release tablets. They are designed to gradually release the medication into your body. Take the pill at the same time every day. You should not stop taking Paxil without talking to your doctor. You may need to take Paxil for up to four weeks before you feel the full benefit of the medication. Stopping suddenly may cause negative side effects.

Paxil Side Effects?
Some people have serious side effects from taking Paxil. If you have any of the following side effects, you should stop taking Paxil and get immediate medical care: high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision); an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); an irregular heartbeat or pulse; low blood pressure (dizziness, weakness); chills or fever; unusual bleeding or bruising; a rash or hives. There are also side effects which are more common and less serious, such as difficulty concentrating; headache, tremor, nervousness, or anxiety; nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, or changes in appetite or weight. Other side effects are possible. Ask your doctor about anything that bothers you.

Paxil Warnings?
You may not be a good candidate for Paxil if you have had any of the conditions listed above. Some patients will need extra supervision. It is not known if Paxil causes problems for unborn babies and is in the FDA pregnancy category C. If you think you are pregnant, or are planning to get pregnant, talk to your doctor about using Paxil. It is certain that the medication is passed in breast milk, so talk to your doctor about it if you are nursing.

Paxil Drug Interactions?
Do not use Paxil if you have also used monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last two weeks. It can trigger a potentially fatal reaction. Fatal reactions are also possible when you take Paxil with thioridazine (Mellaril), so make sure to space them at least five weeks apart. It's important that your doctor know about any history of diabetes, liver disease, seizures, kidney disease, or mania or suicidal thoughts. Women who are breastfeeding, or that are pregnant, should talk to their doctor about whether Paxil is right for them.

Paxil Missed Dose?
If you forgot to take Paxil at your regular time, you can take it as soon as you remember. Return to your regular dosing schedule after that. Do not, however, double dose on Paxil.

Paxil Storage?
Keep Paxil out of sunlight and away from moisture. Make sure the medication is out of reach of children.

Anything Else I Should Know About Paxil?
Paxil falls into the category of medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). They work by keeping brain chemicals in balance and preventing depression, obsessive or compulsive behaviors, or panic and anxiety. Paxil is usually used to treat generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), depression, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
