Famvir Information

Famvir Uses?
Famciclovir is an antiviral drug. It slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus so that the body can fight off the infection. Famciclovir shortens the length of time symptoms are present. Famciclovir is used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses including shingles, genital herpes, and cold sores (in people with HIV).

Famvir Directions?
It's important to follow the Famvir instructions carefully. Ask questions about any point that is not clear to you.

The earliest symptoms associated with herpes infections, including pain, blisters, or burning, is when you must begin using Famvir.

Take Famvir with a glass of water. You can take it with or without a meal, but eating with the dose may help prevent an upset stomach.

Continue using Famvir for the entire course prescribed by your doctor. Don't quit taking it when your symptoms improve, or you may not receive the full benefit of the medication.

If you have active sores from shingles, chicken pox, or herpes, keep them clean and dry. Wearing loose clothing will keep them from becoming irritated.

Famvir Side Effects?
While you are taking Famvir, you may experience some side effects such as tingling in your hands or feet, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, a headache, or itching. Tell your doctor if you experience these side effects.

If you experience an allergic reaction to Famvir, get emergency medical care. Symptoms include closing of your throat; difficulty breathing; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives.

Famvir Warnings?
The herpes virus spreads from person to person easily, and can be passed while you are taking Famvir or other medications. Famvir does not prevent the spread of herpes. Do not allow your partner to touch infected areas. Avoid sexual activity or wear a latex condom to prevent spreading the virus.

Famvir Drug Interactions?
Potentially serious side effects are possible when taking Famvir as well as Probenecid (Benemid). In this case, your doctor will probably prescribe and adjusted dose or require additional monitoring.

Medications besides those listed can also lead to drug interactions. Your physician should know about all other drugs you regularly use, as well as any herbal products.

Famvir Missed Dose?
Do not double dose on Famvir unless your doctor tells you to. If you accidentally miss a dose, skip it and continue with your regular schedule. You should try to follow your dosing schedule carefully.

Famvir Storage?
Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from heat and direct light. Do not store the capsule or tablet form of Famvir in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places. Heat or moisture may cause the medicine to break down. Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed. Be sure that any discarded medicine is out of the reach of children.

Anything Else I Should Know About Famvir?
No one should take Famvir if they know they are allergic to penciclovir (Denavir), unless a doctor specifically prescribes it.

Those with a history of kidney disease should talk to their doctor before taking Famvir. He or she may recommend a different dosage or supplemental monitoring.

Famvir is not believed to be harmful to unborn babies. It is in FDA category B, so talk to your doctor about using it if you are pregnant.

If you are currently breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using Famvir. It's not known if the medicine is passed in breast milk.

The medication is not intended for anyone under 18 years of age. There are not enough studies on its usefulness or safety for children.
